Dear Residents,
We recognize that the decision to close the two longstanding wading pools in Macon has raised concerns and disappointment among some of you. These pools have served our neighborhoods well for decades, offering accessible summer fun and cherished memories for generations. Your feedback has been heard and deeply felt by the City Council and my office.
After much deliberation and community input, the city has moved forward with the opening of a new, modern community pool facility, designed to meet both current safety standards and the growing recreational needs of our community. This new pool includes a free-access splash pad open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. , providing families and young children a no-cost, safe, and fun environment to cool off and play.
From 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the full pool facility—including the splash pad, lap lanes, and shaded picnic areas—is open to pool patrons. While there is a fee for general admission during these hours, we are working to keep access affordable. Currently with the training day on Mondays for the Pool to be closed, the splash pad is operated 8am to 8pm free of charge.
The decision to close the former wading pools was not taken lightly. Unfortunately, due to age, mounting maintenance costs, and safety code requirements, it became increasingly unsustainable to keep them open. The new facility represents a significant investment in our community’s recreational infrastructure and offers expanded amenities, improved safety, and some free options.
We understand change is difficult, especially when it affects well-loved spaces. We remain committed to listening to your concerns and adjusting where possible.
Thank you for your continued passion and involvement in our town. Together, we can ensure that every resident has the opportunity to enjoy safe accessible and fun public spaces.
